Petts Wood

Charming commuter village with independent shops, great restaurants, and ancient woodland.

Getting to know Petts Wood

Petts Wood is the kind of place that people move to and never want to leave. This compact, beautifully maintained commuter village offers an unusually high concentration of independent shops, restaurants, and cafes along its charming high street — a rarity in an age of identikit town centres. The station provides fast, frequent trains to London Bridge and Charing Cross, making it ideal for city workers who want to come home to tree-lined streets and a genuine sense of community. The residential streets radiate out from the station in a carefully planned 1930s development that created one of the most architecturally cohesive suburbs in London, with distinctive Arts and Crafts-influenced houses set among mature gardens.

What Petts Wood is known for

Petts Wood takes its name from the ancient woodland managed by the National Trust on its eastern edge — 88 acres of native oak, birch, and sweet chestnut that have been continuously wooded since the last Ice Age. The high street is legendary locally for its independent character: family-run butchers, fishmongers, florists, and gift shops sit alongside an impressive collection of restaurants spanning Italian, Indian, Thai, and modern British cuisine. The Daylight Inn (named in honour of William Willett, the Petts Wood resident who campaigned for British Summer Time) is a local landmark. The annual Petts Wood May Fayre is one of the borough's most popular community events, drawing thousands for a day of live entertainment, stalls, and family fun.
