A Local's Guide to Petts Wood

Petts Wood is one of Bromley's most beloved neighbourhoods — and one of its best-kept secrets. Here's everything you need to know about living and visiting here.

Petts Wood sits in the eastern part of the London Borough of Bromley, and it has a loyal following among people who've discovered it. Ask any resident what they love about the place and the answers are strikingly consistent: the high street, the station, the woodland, the community. This is a neighbourhood that does everything quietly and exceptionally well.

The High Street

Petts Wood's high street is genuinely special. In an era of clone-town high streets dominated by chains, Petts Wood has held on to an extraordinary collection of independents. Family-run butchers, fishmongers, florists, greengrocers, a proper deli, gift shops, and an excellent selection of cafes and restaurants line the main road. It's the kind of place where people drive in from miles away specifically to shop.

Getting Around

The station is a huge part of Petts Wood's appeal. Southeastern trains run frequently to London Bridge (around 25 minutes) and Charing Cross, making it a favourite among commuters. The station area is also the hub of local life, with the best cafes and most popular restaurants concentrated within a few minutes' walk.

The Woodland

Petts Wood takes its name from the ancient woodland managed by the National Trust on its eastern edge. This 88-acre Site of Special Scientific Interest contains some of the oldest naturally regenerating woodland in Greater London — oak, birch, and sweet chestnut that have been continuously wooded since the end of the last Ice Age. It's a remarkable place to walk, and access is free year-round.

Community Life

Petts Wood has a strong, active community that organises events throughout the year. The annual May Fayre is the highlight of the local calendar — a full day of live music, stalls, children's entertainment, and street food that draws thousands. The Petts Wood Residents' Association is one of the most active in the borough, and local Facebook groups and community boards are thriving.

Where to Eat and Drink

The restaurant scene has expanded significantly in recent years, with new openings complementing the long-established favourites. You'll find everything from modern Italian and authentic Indian to Japanese small plates and traditional British pub food. The Daylight Inn — named after William Willett, the Petts Wood resident who campaigned for British Summer Time — is a local institution.
